iPod Touch, Zune Competitor: Creative Zen X-Fi

New details have been leaked about Creative's answer to the iPod touch and Zune, a wireless music player with Wi-Fi media sharing capabilities called the Zen X-Fi. Besides Internet access, the Zen X-Fi features a nine-point directional pad, Wi-Fi, SD card slot, and built-in speaker.

According to leaked specs, the nine-point pad will offer users the option of instant messaging on Windows Live or Yahoo Messenger in a phone-style typing schema. The device will also use wireless to share media between home networked computers and access an Internet-based media pool, called a Public Home Server.

The player is named after Creative's X-Fi audio technology, which restores lost data in compressed music files to create concert-like audio effects. Users can turn to two X-Fi options — Crystalizer makes audio richer and clearer; and Expand repositions the music to sound like it's coming from in front of you, simulating listening to a live performance on stage.

Maîtres du Temps: Chapter One Watch

The Chapter One watch from new company Maîtres du Temps was created as a collaboration between three of today's leading watch designers, Christophe Claret, Peter Speake-Marin, and Roger Dubuis. Chapter One is equipped with an advanced tourbillion mechanism, along with a retrograde GMT and date indicators, plus a mono-pusher chronograph totalizing 60 minutes. Additionally, just under and above the dial is a pair of rolling displays showing the day of the week and the moon phase, respectively.

Maîtres du Temps only made 33 Chapter One watches, but that doesn’t seem to be a problem after all, as one watch proves to be more expensive than a pretty spacious home: around $400,000.

Blending Digital and Mechanical: Digimech Clock

UK designer Duncan Shotton’s Digimech clock looks like a simple LED clock at first glance, but it’s actually a complicated mechanical machine that creates digital illusions. The vertical slides move slowly into position inside of a black masking box to reveal the time.

As time goes by, the sliders climb to the top, until the 9th digit hits. Then it drops the slider all the way back to the original position. The sliders are moved by 3 servos.

"Green" Cellphones: Samsung W510 and F268

Samsung announced two new cellphones - the W510 and the F268 - at the World IT Show in Seoul. Instead of touting performance specifications however, the company is concentrating on the reduced environmental damage of their cellphones.

The W510 (left) is said to be Samsung's first built with "bioplastic," eschewing synthetic materials for those extracted from corn. The phone is further said to have been built without heavy metals such as mercury or cadmium, and use a water-soluble coating. It will ship later this month to Korea.

The F268 is made predominantly out of traditional plastics, but neither it nor any of its accessories are made with PVC or brominated flame retardants (BFRs). Apple's use of these in the original iPhone was sharply criticized by groups such as Greenpeace. The F268 comes with a charging alarm, which will indicate when a phone is fully charged so that owners do not waste power. It will ship later this month to China.
